As an artist, I’ve created everything from commercial murals to illustrated children’s books. I’ve taught college courses and worked deep in the corridors of the National Gallery of Art. And I paint personal paintings. Today, I keep my focus not only on the canvas, but also on the sky. The vast, deep mysterious sky.
A commission came to do my first painting of the Milky Way. How could I possibly do justice to the spectacular subject matter of deep space? I put my fears aside and just let my heart paint. I had to tell myself I was not creating nebulae and galaxies, but rather I was making PAINTINGS of them. And so this art began.
I have an MFA from Indiana University, studied at The Central School of Art in London, and ran my own mural business for 25 yrs in the Washington DC area. I work with architects, interior designers and fine art collectors on developing custom artwork .
I use archival paints and canvases and panels, and varnish the paintings with UV protective varnishes. Sometimes they have a mat surface, sometimes satin. I use several brands and sometimes mix the media. For example, I may use an acrylic undercoat and oil on top. I use big chunky brushes and very itty bitty ones, cheesecloth, gauze, and airbrush.
